Relation To IB
I believe Phillis Wheatley should be studied in the IB Program because of her caring nature towards the environment and her fighting will against racism. These characteristics would make her fall into the Environments and Community and service section of the IB Areas Of Interaction.
Environments
Phillis Wheatley wrote about how we should appreciate, the beauty of nature, and cherishe of the morning, the soft breeze and the setting sun in many of her poems. She writes about how we as humans should know our responsibility and be grateful of God's creations, an example would be a hymn to the morning and an hymn to the evening. Through her poetry, Phillis wanted to create awareness of how important the environment is to us. This way students would learn how to appreciate and value nature, while enjoying some good literature, so when they become older they can teach others and pass this thought on, so that even more people know, the importance of taking care of our environment.
Community And Service
In many of her poems about slavery, Phillis Wheatley wrote about how the fair people always looked down on the dark race like they were unworthy. She wrote about it had become a natural mentality to think that the dark race was inferior, in relation to the fair race, just because of their skin colour, for example in the poem "On Being Brought From Africa To America", Wheatley writes the phrase "Some view our sable race with a scronful eye, their colour is a diabolic die", here Phillis once again states how the dark live in relation to the fair. This way students will learn to become good citizens and always to help others, rather than hurt.
